Stop encroachment drive in Bidar: Umashree

Source:The Hindu

Umashree, district in-charge Minister, has instructed officials to stop the drive to clear the encroachment of commercial complexes which lacked parking spaces in Bidar.

At a meeting with officials on Wednesday, the Minister sought a detailed report on the issue from Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari.

“I will study the issue and discuss it with you. Till then, you should not carry out demolition of any building. You should not move even a single brick till then,” she said.

The Minister was reacting to Rahim Khan, MLA, who demanded that the drive be stopped. He said that the drive had created a wave of fear among the people. He said that the government had to come to an understanding with the traders and regularise the building violations with a one-time settlement scheme. Mr. Khan said that if the drive was continued, it could lead to law-and-order problems. Ms. Umashree said that she would ensure that it ended immediately.

Cong. complaint
Earlier, Congress leaders in the district complained to Ms. Umashree against the drive.

They asked her to instruct the officials to stop the drive immediately. The Minister said that she would inform the Chief Minister about their concerns.

At a meeting at the Congress office, Mr. Khan made an emotional speech saying he did not want to continue as MLA in a city where traders and owners of commercial complexes were suffering.

He said that he would resign if the drive was not stopped.

Mohammad Saleemoddin , party leader, sought the transfer of Mr. Tewari and City Municipal Council commissioner Gurudatt Hegde. Ms. Umashree said that officials had to follow established procedure if they were to clear encroachments.

District Congress president Khaji Arshed Ali, and Vijay Singh, MLC, were present.

The exercise has created fear among people, says MLA
