Vajpayee Arogyashree Health Scheme saved the life of a poor farmer who was suffering from a serious heart ailment.

Mohammad Ghousuddin (58) went to the taluk hospital after he developed chest pain. The doctors advised him to see a cardiologist and he came to the Sai Preet Bhalke Vaidehi hospital in Bidar.

A team led by interventional cardiologist Dhabaleshwar Sahoo conducted a few tests like Two-Dimensional Echocardiogram (2D Echo) and found that Mr. Ghousuddin was suffering from 90 per cent block in one of the arteries that had to be removed immediately.

"There was no time for paper work and we had to go act immediately. We sought approval of the Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust of the health department over telephone and treated the patient," said Somashekar Bhalke, head of the hospital.

Dr. Bhalke said that Dr. Sahoo cleared the block through angioplasty wherein a stent was inserted to clear the blockage in the artery. The procedure was conducted free of cost. "If not for coverage under the health scheme, the patient would have had to pay nearly Rs. 1.5 lakh, which is the cost of the procedure," he added.
