Withering crops and stories of distress greet the central study team

The Inter-ministerial Central Study Team visiting the drought-hit areas in Jewargi Taluks were greeted with stories of distress and the withering crops and the queries from the farmers, with burnt fingers, as to when would they get the compensation for the loss suffered due to the failure of rains.

The Union Government had deputed a 10-member Inter-Ministerial Central Study Team headed by R.B. Sinha, Joint Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation to study the loss suffered in different parts of the state due to the failure of the rains and submit their report at the earliest. The team has been divided to four groups and are currently touring Bengaluru (Rural) and (Urban) districts, Tumkuru, Ramnagar, Hassan, Kolar, Chikballapur, Bidar, Kalaburagi and Yadgir districts from November 19.

Two members of the team Vijaykumar Batla, Assistant Advisor to the Drinking Water and Sanitation Secretariat, and Deputy Commissioner in the Animal Husbandry Department R.K. Gupta visited Aurad, Chigralli, Ijeri, and Yalwar villages in Jewargi taluk. The team had visited the drought-hit villages in Bidar on Thursday.

The farmers like Raju Thippanna who had taken six acres of land on lease in Aurad village and Basappa Madar of Chigaralli village told the team members that they do not have any hope of getting any returns for all the investment made and their toil this year. “Over and above this we would have to borrow money to harvest whatever little left in the field”.

The Central Study team members accompanied by the Deputy Commissioenr Vipul Bansal, told the worried farmers that they were convinced that the loss has been extensive due to the failure of the rains and they would report the actual fact what they have seen in their report to the government.

The team members also wanted to know why the farmers have preferred to grow cotton, which is not usually grown in Jewargi taluk. “This is not a cotton area…probably you have grown this crop after you got good returns in the last two years”.

Earlier, few farmers from other villages of Jewargi led by Basavaraj Patil Naribol, former Zilla panchayat member took serious exception to the central study team not visiting all the affected villages in the taluk. Deputy Commissioner Mr. Bansal admonished him and said that it was not proper to speak like that to the central study team, which had selected the villages to be visited based on the inputs they have received.

The Central Study team members assured the agitated farmers that during their tour they would see the affected areas and submit a factual report and get adequate compensation to the farmers. The team members would meet in Bengaluru on November 22 and consolidate the report before meeting the Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Department. Immediately on their return they would submit their report to the Union Government.

A Briton who showcased Bidri craft to the world

Allauddin Behman Shah, the second King of Behmani Kingdom, is credited for introducing Bidri craft, a Middle Eastern art form, to Bidar in 15th Century. However, it had to wait till 300 years to become world famous.

Recent research has revealed that John Forbes Royle, doctor, botanist and chronicler of India’s folk wisdom, introduced the craft to the world in the 1851 Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in London.

“East India Company nominated Dr. Royle, the pioneer of economic botany in India, to source exhibits from artisans. He was ideally suited to the job as he had travelled the length and breadth of India looking for unique plant species, and other materials of value,” says Rehaman Patel, artist and Bidri researcher. His book about Bidri art in Kannada is coming out this month. Karnatakada Bidri Kale (Bidri art of Karnataka) includes the history, and stages of evolution of the craft. It also looks at the present state of Bidri artisans.

Dr. Royle was keen that India should benefit from the exhibition. He wanted to help the artisans who produced articles of great beauty and value that were not well known outside their country. India’s artisans will be forever indebted to the Englishman,” Dr. Patel said.

The Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce that organised the exhibition, also featured images of the Bidri artisan hewing silver onto black metal surfaces. The artefacts were noticed by design theorist Owen John, who gave significant space to Bidri art in his ‘Grammar of Ornament’. He described it as an art, remarkable for its ‘elegance and outline’.

Such exposure encouraged the art. Bidri ware items were sold by Liberty and Company in London. The Colonial and Indian exhibition catalogue of 1886 called it an important industry with extensive demand, according to Dr. Patel.

Karnataka CM consults experts on boundary issue with Maharashtra

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today chaired a meeting of experts to discuss the arguments to be placed before the Supreme Court appointed Justice Manohar Sareen Commission on a petition filed by Maharashtra for inclusion of 814 villages of some districts from Karnataka into Maharashtra.

"We had a meeting on the border issue. The case is coming up. We have told lawyers about our stand, they will discuss with Nariman (state's counsel) and proceed on it in the court," Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

Taking steps to protect the interests of the state, the government has all records to show that Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah said.

The meeting was attended by Ministers H K Patil, Satish Jarkiholi, T B Jayachandra and MLC V S Ugrappa, besides retired judges V S Malimath, Rama Jois, S R Nayak and Ramakrishna.

The meeting was also attended by state Advocate General Ravi Varma Kumar and former Advocate General Uday Holla and other legal luminaries.

Countering Maharashtra's plea, Karnataka government maintained its stand that the villages demanded by the neighbouring state already existed within the state as per the recommendations of the Mahajan Commission, which should be considered as the final report.

Apart from the contention of inclusion of 814 villages, which fall in Belgaum, Gulbarga, Bidar and Karwar districts, Karnataka has opposed setting up of 44 Marathi schools in Jat taluk of Sangli district in Maharashtra, where a majority of Kannada-speaking people reside.

Heritage run in Bidar

GoUNESCO, a Hyderabad-based group of travel enthusiasts who run a global travel challenge to encourage young people to visit world heritage sites, is coming to Bidar.

They will organise a monument exploration event and heritage run on November 1 and 2, to create awareness about the significance of monuments and heritage sites here.

“It will be distinct from a marathon in many ways,” Ajay Reddy, GoUNESCO founder, told The Hindu .

“The run will be centred around monuments and heritage structures. It will be a fun event. We will invite families and not just race runners to be part of the run,” he said.

The organisation has organised heritage runs in well-known sites like Hampi. “But now our focus is on lesser known sites. Sites that are off the popular tourist map, need the publicity as they need to be conserved. The villages and cities in which they are situated need to develop,” he said.

The most interesting part of the event will be a “cave hunt” in which a team of explorers will walk through the Karez system, a network of underground aqueducts, built by the Bahmani kings in the 15th century. Those interested in joining the run can register with the GoUNESCO site or its various social media handles.

Hyderabad runs for Bidar heritage

Participants, mostly from Hyderabad and Bengaluru, took part in GoUnesco’s Heritage Run at Bidar on Sunday

Bidar: The past weekend, many Hyderabadis drove 145 km to the fort-town of Bidar in Karnataka to take part in two initiatives of GoUnesco. GoUnesco, a Unesco-supported initiative, works towards making heritage sites fun.

On Sunday morning, the participants from Hyderabad jogged in and around the Bidar fort as part of the Heritage Run and learnt about the historical significance of the area, which was a part of the Hyderabad state till 1956.

Jogging made way for trekking and even crawling in a matter of hours. Participants were taken inside a cave-like structure in Naubad, by an expert to explore and understand the wisdom of medieval engineering.

The cave was dark, damp, cold and smelt strongly of something sulphuric, which the expert later casually explained as “bats’ urine.” Twenty meters ahead, the den started narrowing. What seemed like a cave, was basically an entrance, to an underground water harvesting system that fed the area for centuries, before it was abandoned. And, it could be Bidar’s ticket to becoming one of the World Heritage sites in 2016.

Bidar is one of the many favourite getaways for Hyderabadis. It takes three hours by a car to get to this fort town. If you happen to spot several vents while wandering around Bidar, don’t pass them just for wells. They are very important pieces of history, at least of 600 years old. And, in a couple of years, they could also be listed by Unesco as a world heritage site.

These structures are part of the unique Karez water system of Bidar, which are fast disappearing. They were dug out between 1347 and 1518 during the Bahmani rule, to divert water to a new settlement.

A tour of the Karez wells in Naubad was organised by V. Govindankutty, a geographer from Kerala, who specialises in cultural heritage resource management.

What is Karez system?

Karez is a method of collection, transportation, storage and distribution of groundwater, practised in the arid or semi-arid regions. The concept originated in the Persian countries by the name of Qanat. In India, Karez systems were developed during the reign of Muslim dynasties and are found in Bidar, Gulbarga, and Bijapur in Karnataka, Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh.

How does it work?

Karez systems are architectural marvels. In India, they can be an underground water canal system with air vents every 50 metre, or a series of wells linked by a water tunnel, 40 to 60 feet deep. The Karez air vents acts as wells for the settlement above. Also, the water that flows through the underground tunnel can be drawn out for irrigation from the water tanks it fills up.

Why is Bidar’s Karez system unique?
The Karez system found in Bidar is of the infiltration type. Mr V. Govindankutty explains, “Due to the presence of laterite and basaltic rocks in the Deccan region, making the Karez wells became easier. Since laterite is very porous, water could easily seep into the ground. Laterite also filtered the water making it fit for consumption.”

He adds, “The Karez system in Bidar has been ingeniously built along a geological lineament (fault). And, like most lineaments, on the surface there are a lot of natural streams. These streams allow good amount of infiltration and should have helped keep the water-table high and the Karez perennial.”

Is the system functional?
Though the records suggest that the Naubad Karez has 21 vents, a survey done by Mr Govindankutty revealed 17 of them. Most of the existing vents are still active and being used to draw water for drinking and irrigation.

FUN RUN AT BIDAR

It was an early Sunday for the people of Bidar as many Hyderabadis and a few from Bengaluru took part in GoUnesco’s Heritage Run.

The “fun run” took the participants around Bidar, spotting 12 structures of historical importance including the iconic Bidar Fort, Gurudwara Nanak Jhira, Shah Gunj Darwaza etc.

Bharathi Vadali from Hyderabad said, “Since Bidar is close to Hyderabad, we thought it was a great way to spend our weekend.”

The Karez System in Bidar

The Karez System in Bidar

One of the most unique features of Bidar is the historic ‘Karez’ system (also known as Qanat) which is a water harnessing technology that originated in Iran/Persia. The ‘Karez’ system in Naubad village, Bidar is of great historic significance dating back to almost 500 years. The karez technology basically taps into the ground water sources (or natural springs) and transports it through an underground tunnel to the settlement, ending in surface canal and/or pools in the village for various uses like drinking, washing, ablution, watering livestock, and also further used for irrigating fields, orchards and gardens.

History of Kariz

The original Persian term for Karez is Kariz and the rest of the world has yielded many names for this system; like in North Africa it is called “Fugara”, “Falaj” in Arabia. “Qnat Romani” in Jordan and Syria, “Galerias” in Spain “Kettharra” in Morocco, “Kanjering” in China and “Kariz” in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Karez is found in 38 countries worldwide and of course most of these are concentrated in the Middle East region. Persia is known for the earliest known and documented Karez system.
The Muslim dynasties with ruling class descending from Persia or having influential connections with Persian kings may have invited expert engineers from Persia.
The silk route may have been the information highway to transfer the cultural and traditional knowledge.

Introduction of Kariz in India
Karez system was built by Bahmani kings in 15th Century by the Bahmani kings in Bidar, Gulbarg and Bijapur in Karnataka and also in Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh.
Kariz is nothing but the Underground canals, built to underground water streams which are meant to provide drinking water to civilian settlements and garrison inside the Bidar fort.
This system was necessary in a city like Bidar where the soil was rocky and drilling wells to accommodate drinking water was difficult.
It is believed that the Muslim rulers of Bidar, under the expert advice of Persian engineers followed Karez system by laying subterranean canals in the heart of the rock by widening the natural rift.
The Naubad Karez is estimated to have been constructed during the Bahmani Period (1347 – 1518 AD). The Karez was probably directed towards developing infrastructure for a village at Naubad.

Preserving Karez in India
The Naubad Karez has nearly 21 square shaped manholes were cut at suitable points to conserve ground water.
The modern methods of ground water extraction have largely impacted the water availability in Bidar which already receives low rainfall.
The centuries old Kariz system should be rehabilitated and promoted as traditional means of irrigation and drinking water supply.
The educational value of this historic system is highly relevant in the present days of water disputes that are prevailing at local, regional, national and international level.

Why restore Karez?
Ground water has become the most vulnerable water resources because it has few higher qualities compared to surface water as it is protected from the direct pollution and most importantly the seasonal and perineal fluctuations hardly matter and ground water is much more uniformly spread and conserving ground water is cost effective and reliable and is suitable for any kind of land. Hence ground water conservation and recharging has been gaining momentum across world.
