BSF jawan from Bidar found dead in Assam

Rajkumar Bhalke, the BSF jawan from Bidar whose body was found in Assam on Thursday.

A Border Security Force jawan hailing from Bidar district, Rajkumar Bandeppa Bhalke (34), was found dead near the railway station in Kokrajhar district of Assam on May 23. He was posted at Raiganj, West Bengal.

Bhalke, who had secured one month’s leave, was to return home, his family said. His brother received a call from BSF officials about Bhalke’s death, and was told that the body would reach Bidar on Saturday. The post-mortem was conducted in Assam on Friday.

“If he was travelling to south India, why did he go back north to Assam?” is what the police have yet to understand. “You can board a train from Raiganj to Kolkata, and change trains to reach Hyderabad. You don’t need to go to Assam, if you are coming to south India,” a senior police officer said.

Bhalke’s brother, Veerashetty, said: “when a BSF officer called us on Friday morning, I could not believe it.” According to Veerashetty, Bhalke had visited his hometown in Kapalapur village of Bhalki taluk in April. He was to return home after renewing his leave.

A Kapalapur resident, Ramshetty Pannale, remembered Bhalke as a bright and hardworking student. “We are worried about the mystery behind his death. We are hopeful that BSF officials will conduct an investigation and ensure justice,” he said.
