‘Bahujan’ concept took root in Bidar in 1950

The BSP won the Bidar seat, its first in South India, in 1994

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati will address an election rally in Humnabad on April 27, just after her campaign in Jewargi in Gulbarga. The only other stop in Karnataka is Chikkodi in Belgaum.

There is a historical reason why the political leader chooses Bidar as an important destination for her campaign. After all, the first-ever BSP victory in south India was from Bidar in 1994.

Bidar, Bahujan link

Bidar has the distinction of being one of the few places where there has been an alliance between voters of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes, backward classes and minorities (collectively referred to as “Bahujan” by the party) not seen in other districts.

This is attributed to the legacy of thinkers like B. Shamsundar who spoke of a “Bahujan” alliance way back in the 1950s. “Long before BSP founder Kanshi Ram came up with the strategy of political unity of SC/ST, Other Backward Castes and minorities, Mr. Shamsundar applied it successfully in the erstwhile Nizam State,’’ said Vaijanath Suryavanshi, BSP State general secretary.

Back in 1957, Mr. Shamsundar became one of the two members to be elected from the dual-member Assembly constituency in the second general election. The Independent member got 22.04 per cent votes and won with a margin of 2,274 votes.

“Mr. Shamsundar postulated that 85 per cent of the Indian population was deprived and attaining political power was the only route to emancipation. This, he said, had to be obtained only by forging unity of these groups. He left a lasting influence on the erstwhile Nizam State that got divided into Maharashtra, Andhra and Karnataka,’’ Mr. Suryavanshi said.

Mr. Shamsundar served as a member of the legislative Assemblies in Hyderabad and Mysore States.

He founded institutions like Bhim Sena and All India Federal Association of Minorities.

He was elected the chairperson of the minorities and backward classes convention in Lucknow in 1968. He gave a call for “action against Hindu right-wing oppression” of the untouchables and minorities. His book They Burn is considered among the earliest works on Dalit political ideology.

Later, Syed Zulfikar Hashmi of the BSP won the Bidar seat in 1994, making him the first BSP MLA in South India. “Mr. Kanshi Ram arrived from Delhi to campaign for me,” recalls Mr. Hashmi. He won in 1994, 1999 and 2004, but lost in 2008.

Bidar has a high density of SC, ST and minority community population, 22 per cent as per the 2001 census. Bidar and Gulbarga are among the 90 districts with high minority population.

Union government’s multi-sectoral development plan estimates the minority population in Bidar district at 20 per cent, higher than the State average of 12 per cent.

Shah Rukh Khan the goat bags movie role!

o what if Janaki Vishwanathan’s upcoming film does not feature Shah Ruklh Khan! The film stars a goat (no kidding), who shares its name with the star.

Janaki Vishwanathan with the goat

And incidentally, just like any actor would clinch a film deal, this goat too had to appear for an audition, along with 300 of its brethrens.

Janaki says that she purchased the goat from a village in Bidar, near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border, especially to cast in her film.

Says Janaki, “I have been SRK’s fan right from his Fauji days. With due respect to him, children in villages tend to call their pets by the names of the film stars.”

In fact while paying for the animal, Janaki says the goat’s original owner told her how many Shah Rukhs and Salmans go on sale in the rural parts of Maharashtra.

And in true star style, the goat apparently is living a life of ‘luxury’ right now. Says the director, “We have donated the goat to the Vetenary University in Chennai. It has its own room and is treated like royalty there.”

Kheny nomination accepted.

Bidar South Constituency Returning Officer Neelkanth, on Friday, rejected the twin petitions challenging the nomination of Karnataka Makkala Paksha Chief Ashok Kheny, stating the objections raised were untenable.

Anti-corruption activist T J Abraham and JD(S) candidate Bandeppa Kashempur had filed petitions against the nomination of Kheny. Abraham who is contesting the election against Kheny as independent candidate had challenged Kheny’s candidature on the ground that he had voluntarily acquired citizenship of USA. Therefore, based on the election law, person holding citizenship of foreign nations should be barred from contesting elections in India.

Kashempur had raised objection on the grounds that Kheny had held office of profit. Earlier, both Kheny and Abraham argued their respective cases before Returning Officer Neelkanth. Senior Advocate S M Chandrashekar presented the case of Kheny, while Abraham pleaded his own case. However, Kashempur remained absent during the hearing.

After hearing the petitions, the returning officer stated that objections were not acceptable as Kheny had submitted valid documents. The announcement from the returning officer sent cheer among supporters of Kheny, who rejoiced over the decision.

Kheny flayed JD(S) National President Deve Gowda stating he should not resort to cheap politics through fielding proxy candidate Abraham. Gowda should come forward and fight directly instead of pushing such persons, he charged.

Abraham told reporters that he had raised seven points in his objection petition but Kheny failed to give written reply even to one of them or produce a single documentary proof to support his claim. He neither denied the allegations levelled against him in writing, he added. Abraham has decided to represent before the State Election Officer Anil Kumar Jha on Friday morning seeking a rehearing of the issue.

Bidar constable stabs colleague, kills himself

A police constable stabbed a fellow constable at the office of the superintendent of police in Bidar on Wednesday morning. Caught in the act, the attacker stabbed himself and succumbed at a Hyderabad hospital in the night.

Manohar, 30, the jeep driver of an inspector with the district crime records bureau in Bidar, was stabbed by his friend Narasa Reddy, a constable at the Mannalli police station. Both were appointed in the same year and were good friends. They had worked together at the Hallikhed police station in Humnabad taluk.

Narasa Reddy reportedly came armed with a knife. They met in the morning at the SP's office, talked for an hour and then went to the canteen which is on the ground floor of the SP's office.

After a snack, they came to the first floor office and sat in a corner which was deserted. "Ten minutes later, Manohar started screaming. We rushed in and saw Manohar lying in a pool of blood," said HM Ingleshwar, inspector, DCRB, who saw Narasa Reddy holding a knife in his hand. The other policemen grabbed Narasa Reddy and pushed him away from Manohar.

When Narasa Reddy saw Manohar bleeding profusely, he got frightened and suddenly stabbed himself. "We managed to stop him from stabbing himself again," said Ingleshwar.

Both were given first aid at the Bidar district hospital which said Narasa Reddy died later. Manohar's condition was critical.

Anguished followers set themselves on fire in Bidar math

Three persons, including a teenager, immolated themselves inside the Sri Ganeshwar Avadhoot Maharaj Math at Chowli village in Bidar taluk of Karnataka in the early hours of Monday. The village is about 7 km from Bidar.

Jagannath Swami (30), Eera Reddy Swami (45) and Pranav Swami (16) are believed to have sat on a mound of firewood and set fire to it after dousing it with kerosene around 4.30 a.m., the police said.

They were all followers of Lingayat pontiff Sri Ganeshwar Avadhoot Maharaj, who died on February 28, allegedly after consuming poison.

Inmates of the math alerted the police about the fire. “Loud cries woke them up. They saw flames and alerted our constables. They called the New Town police station and the Fire Services personnel,” said a police officer, who was present at the math.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and struggled for nearly an hour to put out the blaze, he said. “We started removing the firewood and noticed the bodies. Only then did we know of the suicide,” he added.

While the reasons for the death of the 55-year-old pontiff remain a mystery, the three left a note stating their reasons for committing suicide.

In the two-page, partly printed and partly handwritten note, they stated: “Unable to bear the pain of separation” they were “going to meet their departed guru.”

They also stated that they have “no relatives, friends or foes in this world.” They said their “Guru’s spirit had instructed them to come to him through the route of Agni.”

A police van was stationed outside the math premises after the pontiff’s death and the police personnel were sleeping in the math’s community hall when the incident occurred, the police said.

“The Avadhoot had spoken of suicide before he actually ended his life on February 28. Some devotees told us that he had spoken of a mass suicide along with his devotees,” the police said.“The firewood was stocked for the mass feeding to be organised on the math’s annual fair scheduled for April 11,” Shantappa, a devotee from Bhalki said.

Aravind Patil, a devotee from Humnabad, said Jagannath Swami was the one who oversaw the math’s daily affairs. The police have registered a case of unnatural death. They had matched the handwriting of Jagannath Swami from the math’s account books and correspondence with the suicide note and are sure it was written by him.

Over 10 lakh voters in Bidar have EPIC

As many as 10,96,359 voters, of 11,38,617 in Bidar have Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) now, making it one of the districts with very high level of voter enrolment. The remaining 42,258 have yet to receive the cards. The best covered constituency is Bhalki with just 90 voters left out.

The worst is Bidar with 15,880 electors yet to get the cards. Bidar South and Basavakalyan are yet to distribute cards to around 8,000 voters while there are around 4,000 to 5,000 residual voters in Humnabad and Aurad. The district has 5,96,667 male voters and 5,41,950 female voters.

Those who have their names on the rolls but do not have EPIC can get the cards by submitting their photographs to the electoral roll revision officer, the last date for which is March 31.

New additions to the rolls can be made before April 7. All those who have completed 18 years as on January 1, 2013, can register their names. Heads of families can register the names of their family members. But block registration of names by unrelated individuals is not allowed.

A specially designed software of the Election Commission has detected around 30,000 duplicate names of electors. However, officials have retained names of all those voters who have not applied for deletion or change of addresses. This is to allow all genuine voters to exercise their franchise.

Block level officials have been instructed to correct all errors in rolls by the evening of March 27.

Assistant commissioners in Bidar and Basavakalyan are the nodal officers for electoral roll revision in these constituencies. The Joint Director of Industries, is the nodal officer in Bidar South; district water shed development officer in Humnabad; deputy secretary ZP in Bhalki; and the Joint Director of Agriculture is responsible for updating of rolls in Aurad. Each of them leads a team of six officers, said a release by P.C. Jaffer, Deputy Commissioner and district electoral officer.

  • Last date to register is April 7
  • ECI has detected 30,000 duplicate names
